Monthly Meetups

We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at a pub in Nanaimo (Usually the Longwood, in the Brewmasters room upstairs). The location of each meetup will always be posted on this page.

The format of the meetups is casual, a simple get together with like minded individuals enjoying good food, good beer, and good company. We'll occasionally have presentations, so if you are interested in doing a presentation or have an idea for one, let us know!

There will be a post on this page for every meeting, as well as any information (any presentations, etc) so be sure to check here first! For people on Facebook, you can RSVP to the events which will be created under our Outdoor Vanisle facebook group.

September Meetup

Posted August 23, 2010

The September meetup will take place on September 1st, starting around 7:00. As usual we will be upstairs in the brewmasters room, and if you bring an appetite and eat something I won't have to pay for the room! If you use Facebook, you can RSVP on the event page.

Just as a reminder OVI is a community and not a club, so there is no membership - just show up, everyone is welcome!

Hope to see you all there, I'm sure everyone has some exciting summer adventure stories to share :)

August Meetup

Posted July 12, 2010

The August meetup will take place on the August 4th from 7:00 till 10:30 or so, in the brewmasters room at the Longwood Brewpub. As usual there is an event on facebook, please RSVP if you use facebook so we have an idea how many people will be attending!

I've had some people ask if these meetings are for "members" or if anyone can just drop by - to clarify, Outdoor Vanisle is a community, not a club or group, so there is no membership - these events are open to anyone and everyone. Drop by and meet some new people!

July Meetup

Posted June 9, 2010

The July meetup will take place on July 7th from 7:00 until they kick us out - This month we will be at Pipers Pub (longwood brewmasters room was booked on the 7th a few months ahead), so be sure to let anyone you know so we all end up at the right place!

There is an event on facebook, please RSVP if you use Facebook as it helps get a rough idea of how many people are showing up so we can let the pub know. Pipers pub is located on Hammond Bay road (map).

June Meetup

Posted May 12, 2010

The June meetup will take place on the June 2nd at 7:00, in the brewmasters room at the Longwood Brewpub. As usual there is an event on facebook, please RSVP if you use facebook so we have an idea how many people will be attending!

May Meetup

Posted April 11, 2010

We're getting close to capacity at the Longwood, but it looks like we can still get a few more meetups there before we need to relocate to somewhere that can take more than 30-35 people... the next meetup will be again at the Longwood! I have a few places I'll be contacting for future meetups after we get bigger, but if anyone has anything in mind let me know.

The May meetup will be on the first wednesday which is May 5th, at 7:00. If you are coming and use facebook, RSVP so we have an idea of how many people will show up! Event is here.

Hope to see you all there, and don't forget about the mountain biking video we are showing at VIU on April 28th, 'Follow Me'. Check out the previous post for more details!

April Meetup

Posted March 16, 2010

The April Outdoor Vanisle meetup is scheduled for the first Wednesday of the month which is,  April 7th, at 7:00. There is a Facebook event, for those that use Facebook.

This meetup we will have a special guest, Gil Parker from the Vancouver Island Spine Trail Association, who will be doing a short presentation about what the proposed inland trail from Victoria to Cape Scott. The association is looking for help and donations to help make this a reality, so if you are able to help or donate you should checkout the support page they have setup!  Lots more information is available on their website, or just come checkout the presentation!

Special thanks to Ross for organizing the presentation with Gil!

Meeting information and forum updates

Posted February 8, 2010

To make future meetings easier for new people to find and more conducive to discussion, we're working on scheduling them in the private room ("Brewmasters Room") at the Longwood - it's upstairs above the restaurant, and they will bring food and beer to us! There is even a projector screen and we will be providing a projector. If anyone has videos or slideshows, bring them! We can do presentations as well, so if anyone wants to do a presentation let us know and we can set it up.

This coming month we could not get the first Wednesday so it will be the first Thursday (4th) instead, more details & discussion. In the future we will be scheduling it for the same date and time every month to make it easier for everyone to schedule, and we will be aiming for the first wed. of the month (seems to be the best day to avoid conflicts with climbing and other activities).

A couple new forums have been created over the past few weeks that are worth taking note of:

  • Excursions - for people going on trips and looking for others, or for people looking for trips to go on.
  • Trip Reports - after you've gone somewhere, post a trip report here!
  • Backcountry Reports - help the island avalanche forecasters by posting observations of conditions if you are out in the snow.

Lastly, If anyone has any winter pictures that I can use for the header on this site post them in this thread! The image randomly changes every few minutes, but I only have 4 or 5 pictures in rotation right now.

Monthly Meetup

Posted December 29, 2009

A bunch of us have been throwing around the idea of a monthly meetup, just an informal get together at a pub to enjoy the company of like minded individuals and good beer. The idea thus far is the first Wednesday of the month.

If you are interested, let us know in on the forum thread about the meetup or just show up! First meeting is January 6th, 7:00pm at the Longwood (downstairs). We can move around to different spots if we want in the future!
